  • Utah May Get an Additional Seat in Congress?

http://images.bloomberg.com/r06/homepage/HP_INDU.pngGetting around to a late lunch, I check some geek discussions going on with my buds at Fighting69.com, and then checked the news, as I always do. The DOW was down past 500 points! Yikes!! I hit Bloomberg.com for a quick fix for the economist in me and notice an article with Utah in the Title:

The District of Columbia does not currently have representation, so they're thinking Utah may help keep the so called playing field 'level':

"Lawmakers broke an impasse over whether to grant a vote in Congress to the heavily Democratic city by proposing an additional seat for reliably Republican Utah. ...
Utah was open to the deal because in the 2000 Census the state fell 857 people shy of the population required to get its fourth House seat. State officials complained that the Census Bureau failed to count thousands of Mormon missionaries posted overseas, a claim rejected by the Supreme Court. ..."

With things already heating up over the next presidential election.. This could be interesting. There is no guarantee that the DC will get an seat or not, yet Utah definitely has one coming sometime.

  • Battlestar Galactica FTW!

I haven't been so engulfed in the boob-tube in my whole life. The Sci-fi series Battlestar Galactica feeds the issues of Real Life, and my interest more than any other kind of entertainment. Politics, sociology, theology, human sacrifice, fantasy and hope. All mixed up  in one big bowl of pseudo sci-fi and pseudo real life! The undertones hit you in ways that affect your actual RL.

Sure, it's not a TV series for the brain-dead fans of most TV shows nowadays that have pretty people with shallow stories of love and tragedy because someone's BF or GF cheated on them. It succeeds to teach almost every episode.

http://www.scifi.com/battlestar/images/downloads/desktop_keyart_1152.jpgBSG is deep. It challenges you and makes you think.

BSG isn't just another TV show for geek's. Seriously, it isn't. Even the most die-hard Greys Anatomy fans could like this show. ... But this show actually has meaning.

Although there are several other shows out there that I'm a fan of.. Battlestar Galactica FOR TEH WIN!!

PS: Ryan = geek .. no matter how much he tries to think he's not.

Oh, btw, that nuke guy on HEROES is the Caveman on the Geicko commercials!! .. ok, I dont know that for sure.. but he sure looks like him! Cavemen are cool.

  • Freedom of Opinion

first off.. sorry, this is a long rant. ...

Funny. Tonight, I was chatting with someone I very recently met online. The usual convo ensued, how was your weekend? What exciting things are going on in your life? Ya know the usual kind of questions that you ask someone that you would like to learn more about. .. An interesting thing happened. Somehow the characters in the stories being told became not individuals, but were singled out by their nationality. "This Bulgarian, that Pakistani, the Arab. .." Then the comment "they don't betray their friends like americans" came out. ... I thought that was an interesting phrase.

First of all, I love conversations like this with people who do not have the same opinion as I do. I like differences. I like understanding differences. And if you have a different opinion than I do, I will challenge that opinion so I can understand why you think the way you do. And I expect my opinion to be challenged in the same way. I will simply ask why you think, believe or say what you do. Because, how am I supposed to understand your point of view if you do not explain?

The convo went on, like most of mine do in these situations. Me asking questions, trying to understand the person's thoughts or feelings about what they've said. I met that comment about Americans that betray with my typical, reaction: "What a blanket statement!.. Hrm" The previous comment intrigued me greatly! Anyway, the conversation continued with "Americans are the most narrow minded bigots of all" and "u guys lack loyalty".. etc. Each time something like this came out, I asked why this person, who I've had several amiable conversations with in the past, felt this way. And I was never met with a rebuttal. just more insults. Sad, very sad actually.. But still typical thoughts that I've heard from a lot of people. not just anti-Americanism, but anti-anythingism. Some from this country and and some from other countries. All of this is somewhat ironic considering what goes on in the news and real life in this country and other countries nowadays. Like you should know, that is, if you pay attention.

Think of what kind of country this would be if you were not free to share your opinion. If you don't like the government, you can voice your disapproval, pretty much any way you like. If you think someone, or some people, some nation or some religion is bigoted and racist, you can say it. And you can say it whether you are right or wrong. It's your opinion. It's your right as an individual.

Freedom of speech is just one of the many things that people fight and die for in this world. (and when I say world, I mean WORLD.) There are, however, enlightened people in this world who have understanding, who know what is to be human. We are all part of this world whether you like it or not. Not of one single opinion, nation, race or religion. But sadly, these people are not the majority. In fact they are very few.

We have members of Congress advocating blanket statements of hate even. Everyday people generalize their hate. It's sad. .. and only going to get worse I think. Ignorance is NOT bliss. In many cases, it's a choice. What do you choose?

I'm thankful that not only me, but others with differing beliefs can actually voice their opinions where I live. ... Some other countries, you could be beaten, jailed or hung for voicing your opinion.

  • Babel: a Wootious review

I just finished watching Babel tonight. Decent movie, not the best, but I liked it. I love the artistic edge it has. The movie has a political undertone that is (from what I see) fairly skewed, yet somewhat accurate. Very anti-governement, anti-every-government. .. I think the main message of the movie was: "Governments hate you and want you to suffer and die!" laced with the normal lonely outcast issues, mixed with some, 'Hey, some people you think are really bad, are actually really good!', and 'Those that should be good and understanding, are really A-Holes!'. But in the half-good ending, there are lessons to learn. .. and they're all lessons of hatred and anger.  .. I guess it leaves you thinking anyway, and I like movies that end that way.

The realism that it shines on life's bitter desperation tends to be a theme in movies nowadays. The irony of the stories and the whole movie is beyond lame for me though. I like movies that are deep. Movies that teach me things I didn't know or understand the same as some people. Movies that entertain.. I like these type of movies the best. Depressing and ironic stories that don't do anything but teach me about how lame humanity is, I guess I could live without. But the pessimist in me loves it! (this is why i keep tabs on world news).

I'll still give Babel a thumbs up despite of what i just ranted. :)

  • Shutdown Day?

I honestly don't know if i can do this.. I actually may try it. .. although, I really don't see the point.

It is obvious that people would find life extremely difficult without computers, maybe even impossible. If they disappeared for just one day, would we be able to cope?
Be a part of one of the biggest global experiments ever to take place on the internet. The idea behind the experiment is to find out how many people can go without a computer for one whole day, and what will happen if we all participate!
Shutdown your computer on this day and find out! Can you survive for 24 hours without your computer?

  • Stumpy

So, there's been a lot to rant about in the news and life lately. I just don't feel like it though. I'm a fan of 'The Show' if you've noticed. I'm just going to post another vid for today ...

heheh. He feels like p00p! (thanks for pointing that out bl00k!)
  • Happy Valentines!

meh. it's not really the holiday for me. But PostSecret is one of my favorite insightful sites... it has some good V-Day cards this week. It's a site where they post actual postcards that are sent in to them.. from totally random, psycho, thoughtful, and mental people. ...

(click the image to hit the site)

Oh, and the fact that PostSecret references hopeline.com honestly makes me 'lol' .. in a really sad, morbid kind of 'lol' .. but it's still a 'lol'.

Anyway, I hope everyone lets those who are close to them know how you feel.

Well, I am supposed to be on a plane headed to South Africa right now. I'm not. A delay in the project yet again pushes it back one more month. .. And I was really looking forward to this trip! oh well.

Ah, the joys of Project Management. :)

  • Pirates = Awesome

    Oscartorrents.com:

To those worried about downloading in case they get sued: by our calculations, your chances of getting nailed are way less than your chances of winning the lottery. Don't think twice about it.

To all intellectual property landlords: we are aware that OscarTorrents might annoy you -- but contain your righteous indignation for a while, and think: we're only linking to torrents that already exist. Face it: your membrane has burst, and it wasn't us who burst it. Your precious bodily fluids are escaping.

You haven't beaten us, so why not join us? Think of a new business model that doesn't involve overpriced pieces of plastic and skanky cinemas hawking cheap carbohydrates while relying on $6/hr projectionists who can't keep a film in focus -- not to mention insulting your audiences by (to pick a few examples) surveilling us with nightvision glasses, searching bags, 30 minutes of commercials and bombarding us with ridiculous anti-piracy propaganda. Take a look at yourselves. Is it really any wonder we're winning?

Ladies and Gentlemen, Fire up your Torrents!... Yarrhg!

.. lolz, I'm sooo kidding, MPAA

Kiddies, don't steal off the internets mmkay?

Well, I guess I'll have some good movies to watch during my travels this week though.

  • Politicians are teh Lame

Congress/Senate: "Hey everyone! We don't like this whole Iraq war thing... Lets protest by wasting taxpayer money and time by making non-binding resolutions that don't mean jack crap for weeks! Yay!

I mean seriously, the Nation doesn't really have any hard pressing issues of it's own that we need to take care of anyway. Bills? Who needs to pass Bills when we can sit on our butts all day passing resolutions that don't mean anything other than we don't want to do our jobs. .. And lets take our time too, Summer's just around the corner and this whole 5 4 days of work a week is killing us. .. I'm so glad we get Summers off!

... Oh, and let's just ignore that whole Iran thing altogether."

.. You would think the news would jump on this, since it's always good news to poke out how stupid the government can be. .. But they'd rather report on the death of some fat porn star and diaper wearing psycho Astronaut.
